Attachment Training Programme for Practicing Librarians and Computer Professionals of North Eastern Region
The Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) is an autonomous Inter-University Centre (IUC) of the University Grants Commission (UGC) located at the Gujarat University Campus, Ahmedabad. Major activities and services of the Centre are geared towards modernization of academic libraries and information centres, to promote information transfer and access, to support scholarship, learning and academic pursuits. The Centre act as a nodal agency for networking of libraries and information centres in universities, institutions of higher learning and R & D institutions in India. The Centre was established as an independent autonomous Inter-University Centre of UGC in May 1996 and set out to be a major player for promoting scholarly communication among academicians and researchers across the country.
The technology being a driving force in the contemporary education system, the UGC had taken-up two major initiatives for academic community in universities under its purview. The first initiative, namely “UGC-Infonet Connectivity Programme” provides for networking of university campuses with state-of-the-art campus wide networks and Internet bandwidth, the second initiative called the “UGC-Infonet Digital Library Consortium” provides access to selected scholarly electronic journals and databases in different disciplines. The INFLIBNET is responsible for executing and monitoring both the initiatives.
The Centre has taken a number of steps so as to update the knowledge of LIS professionals in North-East and for keeping them abreast with new information technology. A national level convention called PLANNER is being organized every year in the North-Eastern region. Besides, the Centre has offered proactive help in automating libraries in North-Eastern states by provided them the SOUL Software (Software for University Libraries), developed by the Centre. The software was offered free-of-cost to 103 libraries with extensive training for its implementation.
Keeping in view the contributions made by the INFLIBNET Centre in the region and further possibilities, the UGC has given special grants of Rs. 3.05 crores to the INFLIBNET to promote library automation in the region.
The major activities of the Centre include development of software for automating libraries, development of web-based union databases of the library resources, promoting library automation, creation of ICT infrastructure in the universities though UGC-Infonet programme, facilitate access to e-resources to universities and colleges, promotion of usage of e-resources by developing online search-aids and tutorials. As such, the Centre has a lot to offer to personnel working in libraries and educational institutions in the North-Eastern Region.
Attachment Programme (ATP) at the INFLIBNET Centre
The INFLIBNET Centre is happy to launch “Attachment Training Programmes (ATP)” where-in working librarians and computer programmers from North-East can come to the Centre and spend three to six months working in the Centre on ongoing projects with experienced INFLIBNET staff. The trained personnel can go back to their colleges / universities with knowledge and know-how that they can implement in their libraries.
Eligibility Criteria
Young, qualified professionals working in the universities / colleges or other educational institutions in North Eastern region having at least 3 years of experience are eligible for the “Attachment Training Programmes (ATP)”. The candidates for “Attachment Training Programmes (ATP)” in Library Science should have Master Degree in Library and Information Sciences. Applicants having computer knowledge will be preferred.
Candidates for Attachment Training Programmes (ATP) in Computer Science should possess BCA, BE (Computer Science / Electronics / Electrical) or MCA.
The upper age limit for both the category is 45 years.
Professionals who are not working currently are not eligible for the ATP.
Duration
Duration of the “Attachment Training Programme (ATP)” will be 3 months to 6 months. The applicant can opt for either three months or six months ATP depending on permission from his / her parent institution or his / her own preference.
Number of Participants: 4 (Two each in Library and Computer Science)
The INFLIBNET will provide local hospitality to the selected candidates which will include free accommodation at the INFLIBNET hostel, an allowance of Rs. 500.00 per day for a period of 3 / 6 months. The allowance will be paid on monthly basis. The selected candidates will have to manage his / her food expenses from the daily allowance.
Travel Expenses
The selected candidates will be paid to and fro fare (one-time only) from his work place to Ahmedabad as per the eligibility of the candidates and according to the rules and regulation of the Centre.
How to Apply?
Eligible Library / Computer professionals from North Eastern Region may apply for the “Attachment Training Programme (ATP)” in the prescribed Application Form along with a recent passport size photograph duly affixed in it, attested copies of certificates, and an undertaking from their employer stating that the candidate will be relieved from his / her duties for the specified period in the event of selection.
Application complete in all respect may be sent to the Administrative Officer (P & A) at the address given below within 20 days of publication of the advertisement. The Centre reserves the right to reject any application without assigning any reason.
