INFLIBNET Centre
Information and Library Network (INFLIBNET) is an autonomous inter-university centre of the University Grants Commission (UGC). It is directed towards modernization of libraries and information centres for information transfer and access, to support scholarship, learning and academic pursuit by establishing a national network of libraries and information centres in universities, institutions of higher learning and R & D institutions in India. Automation of University Libraries through UGC, provides grants to the universities. SOUL software has been developed to facilitate automation functions of the libraries. This software is attracting many libraries and has more than 1400 installations so far. Human Resource Development is another major thirst area where training of manpower working in the universities in the use of Information Technology is an important objective. Development of union databases is one more major activity of the centre. The UGC-Infonet is a major initiative of UGC under this program all the universities have been given grants to create a basic infrastructure and connectivity. About 150 Universities have already been connected with this Nation Wide Network. E-Journals Consortium has been initiated by the UGC to provide electronic access over the Internet to scholarly literature in all areas of knowledge for the betterment of higher educational system.
