Gauhati University
Gauhati University a premier institution of Post Graduate teaching and research in the country and the oldest and largest university in North East India was established by an act of the Assam Legislative Assembly (Assam Act XVI of 1947) in the year 1948. The University started functioning from a building left by the military in the Cotton College campus and was shifted to the present campus at Jalukbari in 1955. The campus has got some hillock on the southern side and the mighty river Brahmaputra is flowing on the northern side of it. The campus is full of scenic beauty and its area has been developed to a small township, now known as Gopinath Bordoloi Nagar. It is 10 kms from the Airport on National Highway No. 37, 5 kms from Kamakhya Railway station, 12 kms from the Guwahati Railway station and 10 km away from the Guwahati city. The capital complex of Assam at Dispur is 22 kms away from the university. The University is easily accessible from the Guwahati city which has road, rail, and air link from all parts of the country. A large no of bus services from the various parts of Assam have their station at Adabari which is hardly 2 kms from the University campus. Inter city bus services are also available in the campus. The Department of Library and Information Science, Gauhati University was established in 1966 as Department of Library Science introducing one year bachelor degree programme leading to BLibSc. In 1978, a one year Master degree programme was introduced leading to MLibSc. Gauhati University is the first University in the North East India instituting the Department of Library Science in order to cater the manpower needs of the seven states of the region. In 1983, the nomenclature of the Department has been changed and the department is renamed as Department of Library and Information Science (DLISc). The department revised and expanded both BLibSc and MLibSc Syllabi and redesigned the courses at BLISc and MLISc respectively. In 2001, the two year integrated MLISc course with four semesters is introduced with fully revised syllabus. The department has also the PhD Programme. Till date the department has conducted number of Refresher coursers in LIS, Computer Training courses on CDS/ISIS, WINISIS, SOUL, etc at different times for the working professionals. Department also conducted seminars and Conferences at State, Regional and National levels.
